From Ceimici Teoranta to Ultrapure Laboratories
Our site in Corroy, County Mayo, has a rich history spanning over eight decades.
Ceimici Teoranta
Established in 1938, Ceimici Teoranta was a factory producing alcohol from potato starch. After a brief closure in 1939, it reopened post-World War II, shifting focus to glucose syrup production. Potatoes were delivered from across Ireland, and at its peak, the factory employed around 50 people. The iconic chimney, constructed with bricks from Holland and built by a German craftsman alongside local workers, remains a landmark. The factory ceased operations in 1982, resulting in the loss of approximately 50 jobs.
Belco Sports Ltd.
In 1984, Vincent Dempsey and two colleagues acquired the site, founding Belco Sports Ltd. The company manufactured PVC footballs, play balls, and road traffic cones, supplying products throughout the UK and Europe. At its height, Belco employed about 50 people, providing valuable summer jobs for locals. Although manufacturing has ceased, the company continues to trade as Belco Products Ltd.
Ultrapure Laboratories Ltd.
Founded around 1988 by Vincent Dempsey, Ultrapure began by producing small quantities of purified water for local businesses. Under the leadership of John Dempsey, Vincent's son, the company expanded its product range and operations. In 2012, Ultrapure Laboratories was registered as a limited company, and in 2019, it acquired the main factory in Corroy. The facility underwent significant renovations, including the addition of new offices and a state-of-the-art 35,000-square-foot production area.
