5 Tips to Avoid Insect Bites This Summer

5 Tips to Avoid Insect Bites This Summer

Enjoying the warm and sunny weather outdoors becomes difficult if you are prone to mosquito bites.  These bites are extremely itchy and irritating for the skin.  Being prone to mosquito bites is down to your genetic makeup.  A study found that DNA accounts for 67% of the mosquito attraction, meaning some people are considered “mosquito magnets” while others are lucky enough never to get bitten.  If you have the misfortune of being constantly bitten during the summer months, here are six tips for dealing with mosquitos.

1.  Shower Regularly

Mosquitos are attracted to chemicals such as carbon dioxide and lactic acid that are in our sweat and breath.  To avoid attracting insects, make sure to take a shower after exercising to remove these chemicals from your skin.

2.  What to Wear?

Wearing long sleeves and full trousers will give the bugs less of a target.  As mosquitos are attracted to heat, dark colours that attract sunlight tend to also attract mosquitos.  It’s recommended that you wear light coloured clothes to avoid attracting insects.

3.  Get Rid of Stagnant Water and Trim the Grass

You could frequently get bitten near lakes or rivers since mosquitoes live and breed there. While outside in your garden enjoying the sunshine, it’s crucial to empty any flowerpots, clogged drains, bin lids, or excess water that could attract mosquitoes. Insects will have fewer areas to hide and thrive if you cut the lawn and maintain your garden.

4.  Use an Insect Repellent

Unfortunately using insect repellent will not kill mosquitos, but it should stop them from landing on and biting the skin. You can apply the insect repellents to areas of the skin that are exposed. It is important to reapply insect repellent regularly, especially after swimming or showering.

If you are looking for a more natural insect repellent, Lavender or Lemon Eucalyptus Essential Oil can be used. Adding ULTRAPURE Laboratories® Lavender Essential Oil to a diffuser or candle may repel insects and keep them out of your home and garden.

5.  Treating Insect Bites with Essential Oil

For young toddlers in particular, it can be nearly impossible to refrain from scratching an uncomfortable bug bite. Since lavender is a mild essential oil, it can be applied directly to the skin without the need for a carrier oil. To reduce the itching and discomfort of an insect bite, use ULTRAPURE Laboratories® Lavender Essential Oil.

A insect bite may develop an infection and start to ooze.  ULTRAPURE Laboratories® Tea Tree Essential Oil  may help stop bacteria or other microbes from invading the bug bite and may also lessen the itching and swelling. You should consult a doctor for medical guidance if the wound does end up becoming infected.

The Guaranteed Irish ULTRAPURE Laboratories® range is available in Pharmacies and Health Stores (in-store and online).
