5 Tips to Repair Your Nails
What are Brittle Nails?
If your nails easily chip, peel, split, crack or simply feel weak, you may have brittle nails. Having brittle nails makes it difficult to grow strong and healthy nails. Dry cuticles and nail beds cause brittle nails. Nails become brittle and dried out because of too little moisture. Repeatedly washing and drying the nails, using hand sanitiser, varnishes and nail varnish remover may cause dryness.
1. Give your nails some recovery time.
If you religiously wear nail extensions, varnish or shellac, your natural nail may become extremely damaged and brittle and may even develop a yellow-orange discolouration. Giving your nails a break from layers of polishes, gels and chemicals gives them a chance to breathe, repair and allows the discolouration to fade.
2. Opt for an acetone-free nail varnish remover.
Acetone is a chemical ingredient that is found in a lot of nail varnish removers. Because of its strength, acetone lifts most stubborn varnishes and gels from the nail effectively but may leave the cuticle and nail in bad condition and the surrounding skin dry, flaky, and irritated.
3. Wear gloves while cleaning.
While doing household cleaning, your hands and nails are exposed to harsh chemicals such as bleach and detergents. Wearing rubber gloves while cleaning will provide your hands and nails with a barrier and prevent your nails from absorbing these harmful chemicals that can cause damage to them.
4. Clip and file your nails.
Keeping your nails short and filed is essential while trying to restore the condition of your nails. Regularly clipping and filing your nails will prevent breakage and nail splitting, which can be painful and irritating. It’s important to be gentle while you file your nails. Always file in one direction, not back and forth, as this may cause damage.
5. Moisturise the nail and cuticle.
